A brief timeline of the major events in the history of photography that occurred between 1800 and 1850.

1800 – The Camera Obscura – the foundation on which the photographic process is built upon.

1806 – Camera lucida patented by William Hyde Wollaston

1816 – Niepce brothers experiment with light sensitive materials


1826 – Nicephore Niepce produces world’s first photograph



1829 – Nicephore Niepce and Jacques Daguerre begin collaborating to perfect a photographic

process


1834 – William Talbot develops a photographic process that creates a negative image on paper using sodium chloride and silver nitrate.


1837 – Jacques Daguerre develops the Daguerreotype, Which uses a silver iodied copper plate which is exposed and then developed by mercury to give a single direct positive.

1839 – John Herchel presents a paper to the royal Society titled Note on the art of Photography or the application of the Chemical Rays of light to the purpose of pictorial representation, which is the first time the term Photography is used to describe the image making process.


1839 – Samuel Morse licences the Daguerreotype process and takes it to America


1840 – Alexander Wolcott and John Johnson open the world’s first portrait studio in New York using the Daguerreotype process.


1840 – Jozeph Petzval designs the first photographic lens

1840 – John Talbot perfects his Calotype process later renamed the Talbotype process.

1842 – Cyanotype process invented by John Herschel


1850 – the world’s first photographic journal “the Daguerreian Journal releases its first issue in New York
